USPS Rolls Out Smart Locker Service for Peer-to-Peer Marketplace Deliveries

The U.S. Postal Service has launched Local XChange, a new service that lets sellers drop off packages at smart parcel lockers for local buyers to pick up, avoiding an in-person meetup. Announced July 15, the service targets online marketplace transactions between people who live near each other. It costs $5.51 per package, is booked through Click-N-Ship, and lets sellers print a shipping label at home or at a smart locker location. About 700 post offices currently have smart lockers, which use QR codes for pickup and dropoff.

To use the service, sellers need a USPS.com account and a smart locker kiosk within 50 miles of their return address, and items must fit in a locker compartment. Buyers get five days to retrieve a package via QR code; after that it moves to the retail counter for a 10-day window, and if still unclaimed 15 days after the initial notice, it's mailed back to the seller.

The service offers secure, flexible pickup and dropoff and addresses concerns about doorstep package theft. It also gives USPS a way to generate revenue from existing infrastructure at a time when more than 58% of post offices are losing money, per Postmaster General David Steiner's June Senate testimony citing over $2.5 billion in operating costs.

Parcel lockers still aren't a top delivery preference for U.S. consumers — only 6% prefer them, versus 12% globally, per a 2025 DHL eCommerce report. Even so, competitors are investing in the model: Amazon runs its own Locker network, and FedEx said in February it plans to acquire a stake in Poland's InPost to use its parcel locker network in Europe.
