UPS Adds Guaranteed Cross-Border Air Freight to Mexico — A First for Its Parcel Network

This summer, UPS will offer time-definite air freight service between the U.S. and Mexico for the first time on its own aircraft — a service upgrade backed by a nearly $50 million investment targeting automotive and industrial shippers with cross-border supply chains.


What’s New

Starting in August, UPS will offer one-, two-, and three-day guaranteed service options to and from Mexico for heavy, time-sensitive freight. Previously, U.S.-Mexico service focused on small packages, with remaining capacity used for freight on a best-effort basis. The upgrade locks in day-definite commitments. UPS flies scheduled routes to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, with ground options to U.S. gateways like El Paso and Dallas for connecting flights onward.


The Bigger Play

The investment also includes a freight-friendly cross-border product built within the UPS Ground parcel network and a team of 300+ industry-specific logistics experts to help customers navigate tariffs, regulations, and fuel costs. It’s part of UPS’s broader shift away from low-margin residential parcels and toward complex, high-value supply chains in automotive, healthcare, and industrial manufacturing.


Industry Context

UPS isn’t alone in this push. FedEx has been pursuing heavy air freight through its Tricolor strategy, and DHL is dedicating more aircraft to its Forwarding and Express heavy freight operations. As parcel volumes plateau, the major carriers are all competing harder for general cargo — and the shippers who move it.
