FedEx and UPS Add Cubic Volume Fees—Large Packages Could Cost Much More

  • Mar 13

Shipping costs for bulky packages are on the rise. New surcharge rules from FedEx and UPS explain how cubic volume measurements will now affect dimensional and oversize fees.

FedEx applies additional handling charges for packages over 10,368 cubic inches ($29.50–$40.75) and oversize fees for packages over 17,280 cubic inches or 110 pounds ($255–$330). UPS is implementing similar fees, with packages over 10,368 cubic inches triggering additional handling ($30–$40.50) and oversize packages over 17,280 cubic inches or 110 pounds subject to large package surcharges ($219.50–$331).

Experts warn that lightweight but bulky items may see unexpected cost increases, with some shipments potentially tripling in price.

Businesses can reduce the impact by negotiating lower fees or resizing packaging to avoid triggering surcharges.
