Amazon’s First Walmart-Style Superstore Set to Shake Up Chicago Retail

Amazon is stepping up its physical retail game. Check out this important update on Amazon’s Orland Park superstore plans.

The e-commerce giant is building a nearly 225,000-square-foot store in Orland Park, Illinois — its first location comparable to Walmart’s supercenter format. The store will combine groceries, household essentials, and general merchandise under one roof, located next to a Costco on a 35-acre site with dedicated parking for pickup orders and space for smaller businesses.

This move marks Amazon’s renewed push into brick-and-mortar retail, building on past experiments like Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods innovations, and Amazon Go stores. Leveraging its growing grocery business, which generated over $100 billion in U.S. sales in 2024, Amazon is now aiming to compete directly with Walmart’s long-established supercenter model.

Plans have already been approved by the Orland Park Planning Commission and await final village board approval, signaling a serious commitment to expanding Amazon’s physical retail footprint in the Midwest.`
